Why (a + b)² ≠ a² + b²: A Visual Proof in Keynote

What I Created

An interactive Keynote presentation titled “Why (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²?” designed to visually and geometrically demonstrate why the expansion of (a + b)² is not simply a² + b², but includes the middle term 2ab.

Overview

School Level: Malaysian Secondary School (Lower Secondary / Form 2–3)

Subject: Mathematics

Year / Form: Form 2

Topic / Unit: Algebraic Expressions & Expansion of (a + b)²

Curriculum Alignment: KSSM Mathematics Form 2 (Chapter 2: Algebraic Expressions / Ungkapan Algebra)

Estimated Time: 1 Period (30–40 minutes)

Target Audience: Secondary Students (Form 2)

Devices Required: iPad, Apple Pencil

Apps Used: Keynote and iMovie

Additional Hardware: Apple Pencil

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Objectives

1. Students will understand the geometric representation of the identity (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b² by visualizing a square with side length (a + b) partitioned into four smaller areas (a², two ab rectangles, and b²).

2. Students will correct the common misconception that (a + b)² = a² + b² through interactive step-by-step visual animation.

3. Students will apply digital drawing and annotation tools in Keynote to express mathematical proofs visually.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Identify Learning Objective: Introduce the algebraic expansion of (a + b)² and address the common mistake (a + b)² ≠ a² + b² using visual geometry.

2. Prep Materials: Prepare a Keynote slide template featuring a large square of side length (a + b), divided into regions a², ab, ab, and b².

3. Set Up the App: Open Keynote on iPad and set up build-in / build-out animations (Line Draw and Fade/Move) to step through each area calculation incrementally.

4. Add Interactive Elements: Instruct students to use Apple Pencil drawing tools to shade, label, and color-code each distinct area (a², ab, and b²) on their iPads.

5. Test & Refine: Play through the Keynote presentation to ensure smooth visual transitions as each component of the area sum (a² + ab + ab + b² = a² + 2ab + b²) appears.

6. Export & Share: Save the Keynote file and share it via AirDrop or Google Classroom for student self-paced exploration and submission.

Reflection & Assessment

Presentation & Discussion: Have students present their color-coded geometric breakdown of (a + b)² using Keynote Presentation Mode or Share Play.

Assessment Approach: Evaluate student understanding based on their ability to explain why the two ab terms exist geometrically and correctly solve expansion practice problems.

Classroom Tips & Recommendations

Visual Color Coding: Encourage students to assign distinct colors to a², b², and the two ab rectangles to make the visual proof intuitive.

Apple Pencil Precision: Using the Apple Pencil makes annotating side lengths and labeling areas inside Keynote seamless and clean.
