4.3.1 Identify the types of hand stitches.
Engage
- The teacher displays an interactive sewing animation using Keynote on the iPad.
- The slide shows a needle and thread moving through a piece of plain fabric.
- Pupils are invited to touch the “Start Sewing” button on the iPad.
- The needle moves through the fabric using Magic Move animation, creating the first stitch.
Teacher: “What do you think is happening to the needle and thread?”
Pupils: “The needle is sewing the fabric.”
Teacher: “Do you think there is only one way to sew fabric by hand?”
Pupils: “No.”
Teacher: “What do you think we call the different patterns made by the needle and thread?”
- The teacher relates the activity to today's lesson topic:
Types of Hand Stitches
- The teacher explains that different types of hand stitches have different patterns, techniques and functions.
Explore
- Pupils are divided into small groups of four.
- Each group is provided with one iPad.
- Pupils use Keynote to explore an interactive activity called “Stitch Detectives”.
- The main slide displays several everyday sewing articles, such as:
- A fabric hat
- A shirt
- A coin purse
- Pupils tap different parts of the objects on the screen to investigate the stitches.
Pupils explore:
Fabric Hat
- Pupils tap the hat.
- A digital magnifying glass zooms in on the Stitch.
- Pupils observe the close and overlapping stitch pattern.
Shirt
- Pupils tap the shirt.
- The magnifying glass reveals the Stitch.
- Pupils observe the wider spacing between stitches.
Coin Purse
- Pupils tap the coin purse.
- The magnifying glass reveals the Stitch.
- Pupils observe the smaller and neater spacing between stitches.
Activity 1 – Stitch Detective
Pupils identify the types of hand stitches based on the images provided:
- Pupils discuss their observations within their groups.
- The teacher moves between groups and guides pupils without immediately giving the answers.
Explain
The teacher explains the types and functions of hand stitches using Pages and iMovie.
- The teacher plays short video demonstrations showing how the needle and thread move for each type of stitch.
- Pupils watch the demonstrations embedded in the digital Pages worksheet.
Activity 2 – Audio Memo
- Pupils read the information provided in the Pages worksheet.
- Pupils record their own voice using the Record Audio function.
- Each pupil explains the function of one type of hand stitch using their own words.
Explore
- Pupils work in groups to examine different hand-stitch samples.
- The teacher provides examples of fabric articles containing the three types of stitches.
- Pupils use their iPads to compare the stitch patterns.
- The teacher asks pupils to explain why a particular stitch is suitable for a particular purpose.
Elaborate
“Young Designer Stitch Simulation”
- Pupils are given a digital template of a plain sewing article, such as a fabric pencil case or key holder, using Keynote.
- The teacher provides a design situation:
“Choose the appropriate hand stitch to join the edge of this pencil case so that the pencil will not fall out.”
- Pupils discuss the most suitable stitch with their group.
- Pupils select the Kia Stitch because it provides a strong and permanent connection.
- Using Apple Pencil or their finger, pupils draw the thread pathway along the edge of the pencil case.
- Pupils activate Build In → Line Draw in Keynote.
- When the animation is played, the stitch pathway appears as if the article is being sewn in real time.
Activity 3 – Choose the Correct Stitch
Pupils are given different sewing situations and choose the most suitable stitch.
For example:
- Starting and finishing a line of stitching → ?
- Temporarily holding fabric together → ?
- Creating a neat finishing or decorative stitch → ?
- The teacher guides pupils to justify their choices based on the function of each stitch.
Evaluate
- Pupils complete an interactive matching activity using Keynote.
- Six pictures of hand stitches are displayed on the screen:
- Six descriptions of their functions are displayed separately.
- Pupils drag each stitch to its correct function.
Activity 4 – Interactive Stitch Matching
Pupils match:
- Pupils press the “Check Answer” button.
- The Magic Move animation reveals the correct answers and provides immediate visual feedback.
- The teacher reviews the answers together with the pupils.
Reflection Questions
- The teacher summarises the lesson and praises pupils for their active participation, creativity and teamwork.
Teacher's Notes
The teaching and learning session was carried out smoothly through the integration of the Apple ecosystem, particularly Keynote, Pages, iMovie and Apple Pencil. The interactive Keynote activities allowed pupils to explore and compare different hand stitches visually, while the embedded video demonstrations helped pupils understand the actual movement of the needle and thread. Pupils were also given opportunities to verbalise their understanding through audio recording activities and apply their knowledge through the digital stitch simulation. The interactive matching activity provided immediate formative feedback and helped reinforce pupils' understanding of the Kia Stitch, Coarse Running Stitch and Fine Running Stitch.
