Creativity in Note-taking

Notetaking can be monotonous. Copy terms and examples. It can also be daunting if the information is overwhelming to the receiver as the receiver tries to decipher what is imperative to remember.

Two weeks ago, I introduced sketchnoting to my freshman English classes. I started by showing examples of my own then presented the lesson on Notice and Note for non-fiction reading.

Students tried sketchnoting and experimented with colors, spacial affordances, and symbols.

The result: Engaged students who were not only learning how to read non-fiction but how to take notes using multi-modal tools. Students learning to learn.

What a very important skill for your English students! Having colors, shapes, symbols really makes points stand out. Great idea!

I wish more high school teachers would introduce their students to sketchnoting - it is such a wonderful strategy! Our high school teacher actually had students create sketchnotes to compare and contrast 2 poems. The results were amazing as they had to visualize the imagery and find ways to represent similarities and differences. The sketchnotes showed a lot of deep thinking and reflection on the poems.
