One Best Thing - Photo Global Accessibility Collaboration

One Best Thing - Photo Global Accessibility Collaboration

Compiled by Miriam Walsh, ADE 2013, Ireland as part of the 2023 ADE One Best Thing Collection.

Spending a lot of time with Daniela from Spain at the EMEIA ADE Institute this past summer we had various conversations about importance of ALT text and I have been thinking of how we might share this message with our students.

With this impact in might, I took the One Best Thing ADE projects as an opportunity to share this message further. In doing so I have a created a Freeform with a 5 step activity to explore accessibility and inclusion through photography. I would love if people could share to this board but it is also ok to duplicate a blank copy of the board to share with colleagues and students. Links to both are at the end of this post.

Step 1 - capture a photo. For this I have included a video link on how to capture a selfie with voice over because it is another great opportunity to show the importance of accessibility.

Step 2 - add the photo to the Freeform in one of the blank spaces.

Step 3 - add an alt text description to the image. You can do this by clicking on the image or by typing next to the image. When chatting about good alt text descriptions Daniela's advice to us was to think about what you want to convey with the description.

Step 4 - add your name and location

Step 5 - add an emoji or shape to others photos or leave a comment.

Finally share this and encourage others to participate.

This is a wonderful share Miriam and so perfect for learning about and sharing photo accessibility features. I had fun walking around my house trying to capture a decent photo for your shared Freeform board. I finally settled on my cat (which was very hard to describe!) Great practice for learning about accessibility.

Sharing this out on LinkedIn and Instagram!

Brilliant resource! You have really emphasised the need to use ALT text and explained in simple steps how to make photography accessible.
