Augmented Reality with Early Learners - Part 1 (AR MAKR)

There are some amazing and simple to use augmented reality apps that are PERFECT to use with our youngest learners. This post is the first in a series of three that explore some of these apps (see below for links to the other two - which explore WWF Forests and JigSpace). One of my favourite AR apps for early learners has to be AR MAKR.

In it's simplest form, early learners can easily access and create with a range of pre-loaded templates (or scenes as they are called within the app) - such as an underwater world, a space scene, the tiny town, or my personal favourite - The Three Little Pigs 🙌🏻 (perfect for foundation/kindergarten traditional tale retells!)

The video below was filmed onsite at an incredible Early Learning Centre on the Gold Coast as part of the 2022 Apple Education Early Years Series. It runs you through how to create your own scene using the 'Three Little Pigs' template in AR MAKR and record a retell using the AR scene you have created.

Once you have explored the basics of the app with your young learners, why not create your own scenes from scratch using the drawing tools within the app, or by importing your own assets from the camera roll? The best way to do this is to draw assets/images onto individual slides in Keynote and export these as images with transparent backgrounds to your camera roll. If you would like to see this process in action - This YouTube video will show you the process. It was created a few years back and steps you through creating assets for The Very Hungry Caterpillar and bringing it all together in AR MAKR.

AR MAKR is such a great and simple app for students to create in. I am blown away by the idea of lifting images from photos to remove the backgrounds and incorporate into the scenes. I would never have thought of doing that. I was looking for a fun activity to do with my students, and I will be doing this.

Your video was amazing, you explain AR MAKR in a great way and make it not so scary for new users. Thank you for sharing, I will be passing this video link around to my staff.

This is fantastic, Rachel! Your demo videos are outstanding — so clear, and well structured and paced! I really like the addition of inserting your own photos into the AR scenes, to bring students right into the story. And, always, Keynote for the win as a way to bing it all together and add additional elements! Great work! 👏

Wow! Absolute "pinch-me" moment when Eoin Hughes comments on something I share 🤩 I was very lucky to be working with the incredible team from Apple for this recording.
