Play to learn: Helping teachers learn in bite sized pieces

Reflection on Apple Executive Leadership Coaching:

My vision for learning has always been that every student can learn. Through the process of Executive Leadership Coaching, I’ve adjusted that vision a bit to include adults as learners as well. Every person can learn!

Often times as educators, we become overwhelmed and bombarded with all of the tools and resources at our disposal. Through this process, my mindset has shifted from ‘there is so much I need to learn’ to ‘keep it simple’. I can focus on becoming an expert at one or two apps rather than learning a little about a lot of apps.

My wonderful coach, Christine Klynen and I decided to dig deep into Freeform. We started with just her teaching me to use the tools with bite sized activities. The idea of ‘Play to Learn’ evolved where my Digital Learning Specialist and I will facilitate 5-10 minute activities at our monthly staff meetings. Our vision is to give teachers the time and space to engage in technology with a fun, quick activity. Our goal is that the teachers will be inspired to dig a bit deeper into the platforms that they are curious about and bring that new learning to their students.

Play to learn tool exploration session.
I’ve inserted a photo of my tool exploration session with Christine. This will be the jumping off activity that we will bring to the staff. First focusing on exploring the tools, then moving on to collaborating on Freeform and then to exploring the community link to find ideas for using Freeform and adapting the ideas of others to meet our needs in the classroom.

The journey through Executive Leadership Coaching helped me to understand that while I may know all of the tips and tricks in using Apple products, I can learn a lot about a few products rather than just a little about all of the products.

Wonderful “one step at at time” approach. Super use of Freeform!

Play is so important for teachers. Giving them the time and space not only to learn but to begin to think differently, to ideate, to see themselves as creators. Your idea to give them one bite at a time....I wonder if over time, teachers will become masters of what tech they enjoy the most -- this way you have tons of experts in the various tech available on staff!
