Create a Multiplication Store

Lesson Objectives:

3rd Grade students created stores to show their beginning understanding of multiplication arrays and their relationship to repeated addition. Students used shapes to create different items to "sell" at their store. Their store could have multiple aisles to shop on, such as a tools aisle, sports aisle, etc. Students also used Clips to create a commercial to advertise their store.

After watching each commercial, students decided on which stores to shop at. Students walked around the class and visited the stores, keeping track of what they purchased. When looking at the cost of each item, they used arrays to help them write an equation. For example, if they wanted to "purchase" 5 pairs of goggles, they could write the equation 5x3=$15, or 3+3+3+3+3=$15. Then, at the conclusion of their shopping, students total how much they spent, and each store owner totals their sales.

Very creative way to use Keynote. I bet some of the Clips store commercials were fun.

How fun!! I’m guessing the students loved the connection to math in real life with the shopping aspect, and I’m sure they had a blast making their commercial! Thanks for sharing
