Creative iPad Projects: Enhancing Digital Skills Through Photography

Goal: Mastering Photography on iPad in Designing Digital Outcomes (DDO)

Overview: Year 10 students at Rotorua Boys' High mastered photography on iPads, building digital skills by creating personalised Digital Photo Books that teach new skills.

Learning:

DDO is a new course for us, at Rotorua Boys’ High School this year, and I’m thrilled to see our Year 10s are embracing the challenge. By starting with Apple apps and a badge system, we’re fostering creativity in a way that is both supportive and inclusive, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to explore, innovate, and succeed in the digital world.

This term, our focus has been on earning the Pukeko Badge, a milestone that showcases the students' mastery of photography skills learned through the "Everyone Can Create” curriculum. The Pukeko Badge is earned by completing a template that captures their learning. Though the template is intentionally basic, it serves as an inclusive starting point. Students are encouraged to personalize it, using their knowledge of Keynote and other tools to make it their own—demonstrating not just their technical skills, but also their creative problem-solving abilities.

Recognising the diverse range of abilities in the class, we provide scaffolding to support all learners, giving everyone a solid starting point. The "Template Photo Tasks," drawn from the Everyone Can Create photo book, served as this scaffold. While the tasks provide structure, they also left plenty of space for creativity, allowing each student to start from the same place but take their work in a direction that was uniquely theirs.

The students then applied their skills in a final challenge: creating a Digital Photo Book that teaches a new skill to someone else. Whether it was "How to do a Manu" or "How to kick a rugby ball," our boys used their photography talents to visually instruct others, stepping out from the scaffolded structure onto a blank canvas where their creativity could truly shine.

Nice photo challenge that brings together their skills in photography, keynote and provides a guide for others in a skill that they can teach. Thanks for explaining your process!
