Every year sixth graders come in from fifth grade full of personality and curiosity, but most of them have no idea what kind of reader they are yet. The moment they step into our media center, Chapter One, they look around at the bright genre stations and you can almost hear them thinking, So where do I even start. To guide them without overwhelming them, we follow a simple six step process that brings out their best thinking, communication, and confidence.
Step One: Take the Genre Personality Quiz
We kick things off with a quick quiz that reveals their top three genres. They read carefully, make thoughtful choices, and then compare their results with that proud little smile that says, Oh, this actually makes sense.
Step Two: Explore the Genre Stations
They move through the room checking out each display. They notice details, ask great questions, and stay open to genres they have never tried before. It is pure curiosity at work.
Step Three: Taste Test the Stories
At each station they pause and sample short excerpts. They reflect on what pulls them in and what does not. They are honest with themselves and each other, which makes the conversations even better.
Step Four: Claim Their Top Three
Students grab Post it notes, write their names on them, and place them under the three genres that feel like the best match. The wall fills with colorful squares covered in their names, and suddenly they are spotting classmates who share similar interests. It sparks great conversations and builds a sense of community.
Step Five: Check Out Books to Match Their Personality
Once they understand what speaks to them, they choose books that match their top three categories. You can see them thinking carefully and taking ownership as they make their selections. They walk out with purpose, ready to dive in.
Step Six: Return, Reflect, and Recommend
When the books return, students create short book talks using Clips. They share their insights clearly and creatively, mixing visuals and voice to help others understand what made the story stand out. Their videos spark new recommendations and build a reading community that thrives on honesty, curiosity, and thoughtful communication.
By the end of the process they know themselves as readers. Chapter One becomes their comfortable place to explore, choose, and grow. They browse with confidence, choose books with intention, and help each other discover new favorites. Watching that growth unfold is the real joy in the media center.
