US Symbols (Second Grade Social Studies)

Do you need a way to make the symbols of the USA come to life? While learning about the symbols of the USA,  in second grade, we used Keynote and animated line draw to both illustrate common US symbols and record facts that we learned.

First, I shared a Keynote template with my students. The template had the name of the symbols we would be learning about and a picture of the symbol.

Next, the students traced over the picture of the symbol. A helpful tip is to remove the background of the photo and change the opacity so they can see where they've drawn.

Once they finished drawing the symbol they clicked on their drawing and then clicked "animate". They chose add build in and then line draw.

Finally, the students recorded a voice recording of the facts they learned about that US symbol and synched it to the line drawing.

So wonderful! Love hearing the student voices - great activity for learning about symbols - at any age!

Hi. This is really neat and I'd love to use the idea. Any chance you'd be willing to share the Keynote template with the names of the symbols you learned about and the pictures?
