This activity is an extension of Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse where students are challenged with an open-ended task of designing a self-heating device using their knowledge of exothermic reactions.
Teachers can customise the task and add/remove scaffolding as required, such as providing the list of chemicals or requiring students to research reactions on their own.
As an extension, students can collect data by carrying out the experiment in the lab and doing a group presentation after the activity to share their findings.
