Hi there everyone! I’ve been teaching a geology/earth science course this yea and wanted to share one of the activities that my learners and I have been working on. As we went through and discussed the rock cycle we made interactive rock cycles in Keynote. I have linked my version I created along side them below.
I’ve also broken down the process for making these into three parts if you are wanting to do this activity, or something similar, with your learners.
Step 1 - Rock Slides
For this rock cycle the first thing I had my learners do was to find three rock they want ed use in their cycle: 1 igneous, 1 metamorphic, 1 sedimentary. I also challenged them to try and find three of these rocks that were related to one another; this would make the rock cycle actually show the changes that incurred throughout the true cycle. After identifying the rocks they wanted to use for their project it was research time. They needed to investigate those three samples and find the following:
- High Quality Image of Sample
- Mineral Composition
- Accurate Visual Description
- Key Properties
With this information they were then able to arrange their slides for the rocks as they see fit. Annotating the image to show the minerals present, making text boxes to write the descriptions, or adding their own drawings to show the composition, all creativity was up to them. If you want them to follow a specific way to arrange the information I highly suggest providing them with a template they can use.
Step 2 - Transformation Slides
After the 3 slides for the rocks, its time for the 3 slides that describe how the rocks transition through the cycle. On these slides I had the learners write their ow summary of the process that occurred at each of these points or they could draw the changes that happened within the rock itself.
Step 3 - Create Slide Links
Lastly we need to add buttons/shapes to the link the slides together. Adding a link that takes us to the proper slide is all that we need to do! Just make sure that you have all the links going to the correct slides. Try testing this out in a presentation to see if you are taken to the right slide when you select the button/shape.
If you have any questions about this activity or anything related to it please reach out!
