Designing for Change:Technology-Enhanced Advocacy Posters for Inclusive Communities

How can students use technology to become advocates for a more inclusive world? In our Grade 6 Reading class, learners explored this question through a collaborative advocacy poster project grounded in the Learn–Practice–Show (LPS) Framework. In this project, students designed digital advocacy posters that promoted accessibility, equity, and inclusion while applying persuasive communication techniques learned in class.



The Learning Experience


Working in small groups, students selected issues connected to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, including inclusion of persons with disability, gender equality, anti-bullying initiatives, and digital accessibility. They researched their chosen topics, developed advocacy messages, and incorporated propaganda techniques such as testimonial, bandwagon, and glittering generalities to influence an intended audience effectively.


To support the design process, students used Apple applications throughout the project:

  • Pages for drafting advocacy statements and written explanations
  • Keynote for designing digital advocacy posters
  • Freeform for brainstorming, planning, and organizing ideas collaboratively


These tools also enabled real-time communication, revision, and shared accountability among group members.



Learn–Practice–Show in Action

Learn

Students examined examples of advocacy campaigns, analyzed persuasive techniques, and researched issues related to accessibility and inclusion. Using Pages and Freeform, they gathered information and organized their ideas before beginning the design process.


Practice

Groups drafted advocacy messages, experimented with poster layouts, and refined their visual designs through peer and teacher feedback. Keynote provided a flexible space for combining text, images, and visual elements into a cohesive advocacy campaign.


Show

Students produced a final digital advocacy poster accompanied by a brief written explanation describing the purpose of their advocacy and its connection to reducing inequalities. The completed projects were featured in a school-wide digital exhibit, providing an authentic audience and encouraging students to use their voices to inspire action within the community.

This project moved students beyond simply learning about social issues to actively advocating for change. By integrating research, persuasive writing, visual communication, and digital design, learners strengthened critical literacy skills while developing empathy, collaboration, and social awareness.


The use of Pages, Keynote, and Freeform empowered students to take ownership of their learning. Students independently managed tasks, revised their work based on feedback, and made intentional design choices to communicate meaningful messages. The authentic audience provided additional motivation, resulting in high levels of engagement and investment in the final products.



Why This Works

The project is highly replicable because it relies primarily on built-in Apple applications that are readily available in many learning environments. Educators can adapt the task to different content areas by changing the advocacy focus:

  • Language Arts: persuasive and informational writing
  • Social Studies: civic engagement and social issues
  • Science: environmental sustainability and conservation
  • Health: wellness and positive social behaviors


By combining student voice, authentic audiences, and creative digital tools, this activity provides a meaningful way for learners to develop communication skills while making connections between classroom learning and real-world issues.
