Part I: Designing Disaster-Resilient Sustainable Homes through Challenge-Based Learning

Resource Overview

  • Grade Level: Grade 10
  • Subject Area: Technical Drafting (Technology and Livelihood Education)
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Lesson Objective: At the end of the 60-minute session, learners will apply residential building standards set out in the National Building Code of the Philippines and propose a residential floor plan with correct dimensions and appropriate architectural symbols.
  • Expected Output: Digital Floor Plan

Challenge Overview

This forum has a prerequisite activity titled Community Needs and Initial Home Design, which serves as the foundation for the succeeding design tasks. In this stage, students transition from traditional drafting to digital design. Using iPad apps such as Freeform and Notes, they refine their floor plans while researching sustainable and disaster-resilient housing features. Learners collaborate with peers, engage in iterative feedback, and revise their outputs to improve functionality, safety, and innovation in their housing solutions.

Essential Challenge

How can technology help us improve housing designs to create safer, more sustainable communities?

Learner submission using Magic App

Activity Guidelines

  1. This is an individual activity.
  2. The learners will use the MagicPlan app to create the floor plan. They may also use another related application, such as Minecraft, Block Craft 3D, Planner 5D, or similar applications on the iPad.
  3. The learners may opt to create a single-story (bungalow) or two-story unit.
  4. The unit of measurement to be used is meter, no scaling needed.
  5. A minimalist architectural design for the house interior is encouraged.

Impact on Learning

At the end of the challenge, students will be able to develop digital fluency using design applications, strengthen collaboration and communication through peer feedback, improve critical thinking and decision-making skills, and learn to justify their design choices using evidence and research.
