What if your students could travel across Philippines without leaving the classroom? How can Grade 5 and 6 learners deepen their understanding of Philippine geography, culture, and regional identity by creating an interactive digital travel brochure entirely on iPad?
This lesson shows how Grade 5 and 6 Social Studies teachers can guide learners to design a regional travel brochure for one Philippine region entirely on iPad using apps already on the device. Students research their assigned regions (Ilocos, Bicol, Visayas, Mindanao, and so on), draft descriptive content with Apple Intelligence Writing Tools in Pages, generate culturally inspired illustrations with Image Playground, add image descriptions and proper paragraph styles for accessibility, and compose a short regional soundscape in GarageBand that plays directly inside the brochure. The lesson focuses on Philippine geography, cultural diversity, and digital citizenship, while building real-world skills in writing, visual communication, and responsible AI use.
GRADE LEVEL: Grades 4–6
SUBJECT AREA: Social Studies / Araling Panlipunan
DURATION: 4–5 class sessions (45 min each)
DEVICES iPad
DELIVERABLES: Multi-page Pages brochure + audio using garageband
Activity 1:
Introduce the project: Region in the Philippines as the model
Assign one region per pair or small group 3-5 (depends on class size). Each region offers rich cultural material and connects directly to AP competencies on Philippine geography and cultural identity.
Activity 2:
Research & Brainstorm using Safari & Notes/Freeform
Open Safari on the classroom display or share your screen via AirPlay. Browse the official Tourism Philippines website (tourism.gov.ph) together.
Teacher should project Safari on the classroom display. Open wikipedia.org or https://tourism.gov.ph/ and navigate to the assigned region's page together. Model how to identify key facts:
location, geography, known festivals, food, and landmarks.
Students open Notes on their own device and use Checklist style (Format -Checklist) to record at least five facts per category.
Activity 3: Set up the Pages brochure template
Open Pages tap + choose Brochure from the template gallery (search "brochure"). Select the Travel Brochure template. Rename the document to [Region Name] Exploring Region III Brochure.
Actvity 4:Write Content with Apple Intelligence Writing Tools
Model the Writing Tools workflow live on the projected display. Students open their Pages brochure and type a rough first draft for the Welcome panel using their Notes research. Then they select the text and tap the Writing Tools button ( pen icon) in the Pages toolbar.
Sample Prompt
Here is the result:
“Discover the enchanting beauty of Ilocos Norte, a captivating region nestled in the northern Philippines. Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of history as you explore its charming old buildings that whisper tales of the past. Feel the invigorating embrace of the wind as it sweeps across the picturesque landscapes, adding a touch of adventure to your journey. Ilocos Norte awaits, promising an unforgettable experience where history and nature harmoniously blend.”
Activity 5: Create Illustrations with Image Playground
In Pages, tap where an image should go. Tap Insert > Image Playground. The Image Playground panel opens. Students type a description of what they want to see
for example:
"A colorful festival parade in my region, inspired by the Philippines, with flowers and lanterns, animation style."
Activity 6: Compose a Regional soundscape using GarageBand
Open GarageBand, tap + then Live Loops. Show students the Loop browser (tap the loop icon in the top right corner).
Students combine 3–4 loops that feel authentic to their region's character.
Export and embed into Pages: Tap the triangle Share button > Song > Save to Files. In Pages, tap Insert Audio , locate the saved GarageBand file. An audio player widget appears in the brochure. Students add a text caption below it: Tap play to hear the sounds of Baguio City as Summer Capital of the Philippines, a blend of tropical and Panagbenga, also known as the Baguio Flower Festival, sound.
****Accessibility: The audio caption serves as the text equivalent of the sound for learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. Remind students: "Your caption describes what the audio feels like, not just what it technically contains."
****For advanced students: Use the Smart Keyboard instrument in GarageBand to compose an original 8-bar melody inspired by a traditional Filipino musical scale. Record it as the lead track over the loop-based soundscape.
Activity 7: Add descriptive link and finalize layout
Show students how to add a hyperlink in Pages: select text > tap the blue popover > Add Link. Then demonstrate the difference between a non-descriptive and a descriptive link.
Final checklist students self-review before submitting:
- All images have an Image Description written in the Format panel
- All links use descriptive text
- Title, Heading, and Body paragraph styles are applied consistently
- GarageBand audio has a caption describing the soundscape
Activity 8 Final Project:
Philippine Regions Expo: Share, present & peer review
Host a "Region Expo."
Rearrange the room in an expo / gallery format. Each group places their iPad on their desk with the brochure open, audio playing at low volume. Students rotate every 5 minutes using a timer shown on the classroom display. This mirrors real-world cultural fairs and feels genuinely meaningful.
Students will complete a peer feedback card with three sentence starters:
1. "One thing I learned about this region is…"
2. "One cultural detail that surprised me was…"
3. "A suggestion for making the brochure even clearer is…"
21st Century Skills Developed in this sample lesson:
Philippine geography and regions - Students demonstrate understanding of the physical and cultural characteristics of Philippine regions aligned to Grade 5–6 AP competencies.
Pagpapahalaga sa kulturang Pilipino (Cultural Diversity) The expo celebrates regional differences in language, food, festival, and landscape reinforcing the value of unity in diversity (pagkakaisa sa pagkakaiba-iba).
Communication and collaboration Students present, explain, and defend their brochure design choices to peers practicing oral communication and respectful peer feedback in a real-world format.
Critical thinking Comparing AI-generated illustrations to real cultural references, evaluating peer feedback, and deciding what to revise all require higher-order thinking.
