The "Why" Project: Exploring the Heart of American Symbols, Holidays, and Traditions

In our quest to engage head, heart, and hands of students, our fifth graders set out on a journey to answer some big questions about our nation’s symbols, holidays, and traditions. Why do specific holidays matter? Why do we honor certain symbols and traditions, and what do they really mean to us today?

"Each symbol, holiday, or tradition holds a story of our country’s values—like freedom, unity, and perseverance. By exploring their history, understanding their meanings, and connecting them to our own lives, we’ll discover why these things are important to Americans. You’ll be like a detective, gathering clues and piecing together the “why” behind each topic."

Using Apple Pages, we created a research guide for them to dive deeper and wider into the typical understanding of holidays, traditions, and symbols.

  • Research the Origins: Find out where, when, and why these symbols and traditions began.
  • Discover the Meaning: Explore what each topic represents and how it connects to American values.
  • See How It’s Changed: Look at how people’s understanding or celebration of it has changes over time.
  • Share What You Learned: Create a final project to explain the importance of your topic to others.
