Using AR to Engage Learners in Science: Living Things (Features and Lifecycles)

Who doesn't love Augmented Reality?

The Learning Intention for our students was two-fold: explain how living things change as they grow and describe the external features of living things. We also aimed to develop their skills in using technology to demonstrate their learning.

This learning sequence comes under the umbrella of Science and Technology (Living Things), however, the tasks outlined could be adapted for any subject area.

The first part of the learning was building student skills in photography from this post and differentiating between living and non-living things.

Then, the learning focus led to observing and describing the physical characteristics of living things, delving into why plants and animals possess distinct external features. We used the Plantale app to introduce the features of a plant through AR. Lots of scaffolding enabled students to create a script to describe their chosen creature, and then create a scene in ARMakr and record a video to demonstrate their understanding.

The final part of the learning sequence was about lifecycles and to explain how living things change as they grow. Earlier in the term, we had a chick hatching program at school and so the students were asked to describe the stages of this particular lifecycle. This time, students could draw each part, write a script detailing the process, and then create an AR scene and record their narration.

These tasks were completed over a school term by Year (Grade) 1 and 2 students, however, this could definitely be adapted for older students.

I created some how-to videos for using ARMakr for our students: How to Draw in ARMakr and How to Create an ARMakr Scene.

Check out some student examples are here and here.

How have you incorporated AR into teaching and learning?

The student examples are priceless! Super AR idea for teaching lifecycles!

Ah Cheryl, you are very kind! Thank you! It was a fun experience and by using a very structured, step by step skill development approach, the students had the opportunity to practice new skills. We definitely will do something along these lines again!
