Numbers supports hundreds of mathematical functions for performing complex calculations and manipulating data. You can use functions to verify logical statements, count occurrences of certain items, average data based on specific conditions, and much more.
Add a function that displays the maximum value in a list. Tap a cell where you want the function to appear, then tap Keyboard button.
Open the Functions Browser. Tap Formula Keyboard button, then tap Functions Browser button.
In the Functions Browser, tap the Categories tab, choose Statistical, then choose MAX.
Once the function appears in the formula editor, tap or drag to select the cells with numbers you want to include in the calculation.
Use the blue handles to refine your selection, then tap OK button.
Explore other functions. Tap Functions Browser button, choose a category, and then tap Info button next to any function name to see information about it and examples of how you can use it.
Find the upper and lower range of assignment scores in a grading spreadsheet. Use MAX to reveal the highest value and MIN to reveal the lowest.
Make math personal and insightful. Enter heights for every student in your class, then use COUNTIF to count the number of students with a particular height.
Functions can help you identify important trends across large data sets. Consider using the COUNTIF statistical function to count how often specific results are found in your data set.
