Music, sound effects, and narration can enhance the drama of your stories and make them more exciting. Use voiceover narration to add information to a documentary and add music to establish the tone of your video.

Set up voiceover recording. Click Record Voiceover , then click Voiceover Options and choose a microphone option from the Input Source drop‑down menu.
Record. In the timeline, position the playhead where you want the recording to start. Click Record to start recording. After a 3-second countdown, recording begins.
Click Record to stop the recording, then click Done to finish. A green audio track is added to your project below the video clips.
Add background music. Switch to the Audio tab in the browser. Select Music or GarageBand in the sidebar, choose the track you want to use, then drag it to the timeline.
Add sound effects. With the Audio tab open, click Sound Effects in the sidebar. Use the Effects menu to choose a category.
Double‑click a sound effect to preview it. Drag a sound from the list to the timeline and position it where you’d like it.
Fade audio. Move the pointer over the audio portion of a clip to reveal the fade handles at the start and end of the clip. Drag the fade handles toward the center of the clip to create a fade‑in or fade‑out.
Add an audio narration to a series of photos. Record a voiceover to describe a story as the photos play.
Bring photos to life in an instructional video. Add sound effects or environmental sounds to the video.
When multiple clips with audio are playing at the same time, iMovie can automatically lower the volume of the background tracks so they don’t compete with the clip you want to hear.
