Speed effects and cinematic filters are powerful tools for making engaging, instructional movies. Speed up or slow down a clip to reveal detail. Add freeze frames to highlight key moments. And use filters to create a mood.
Create a freeze frame. Skim to the frame of the clip that you want to freeze and click to position the playhead there. Then choose Modify , Add Freeze Frame.
Add a slow-motion or fast-motion effect. Select a clip in the timeline, then click Speed in the adjustments bar. Choose either Slow or Fast from the Speed drop‑down menu, then click one of the speed options to set the speed.
Change the speed of just part of a clip. Select a range in a clip by holding down the R key and dragging across the clip. Click Speed and adjust the settings to make the speed faster or slower. The changes are applied only to the portion of the clip you selected.
Add a video filter. Select a clip, click Effects in the adjustment bar, and click None in the Clip Filter field to display clip filter options.
Skim over the thumbnails in the Choose Clip Filter window to preview the effects in the Viewer, then click the effect you like to apply it to your clip.
Add an audio effect. In the timeline, select an audio clip or a video clip with audio, then click None in the Audio Effect field to display audio effect options.

Grab viewer attention at a special moment in an archival film clip. Add a freeze frame at an important moment or at a point that requires contemplation.
Make a long process move quickly onscreen to highlight change over time. Speed up a clip of the setup of a school event or science experiment.
iMovie trailers are an easy way to create short, entertaining videos — complete with stunning graphics and a cinematic score. Use trailers to introduce new lessons, promote a school function, or turn a student’s story into a blockbuster event.
