Using a simple green backdrop, you can use iMovie to isolate the subject of one video clip and superimpose it over the background of a second clip. By combining clips in this way, you can create fun shots of people in dramatic settings or standing in distant locations for news and weather reports.
Add a green‑screen clip. Drag a clip of a subject recorded in front of a plain green backdrop above an existing clip in your project so that the two clips are stacked one on top of the other.
Turn on the effect. Click Video Overlay Settings in the adjustments bar, then choose Green/Blue Screen from the drop‑menu on the left. Any parts of the green‑screen clip that are either green or blue automatically become transparent so that the background clip shows through.
Adjust the green‑screen clip. Click Crop , then drag the corners of the frame to crop out any portions of the green‑screen clip that you don’t want to show.
Refine the effect. Under the adjustments bar, drag the Softness slider to smooth the edges of the green‑screen mask and create the most realistic blending of the two shots, then click Apply .
Wander through a land of make‑believe. Add student‑created illustrations as backdrops to create fictional settings for your movie.
Travel back in time. Place a subject in front of archival photos and video of historical events for a report that brings history to life.
Fine‑tune the green‑screen clip with the Clean‑up tool to make the effect more realistic. Use the tool to remove any small portions of the green‑screen clip that should not be showing.
